I am a natural scientific skeptic, but all the warnings to stay away from this have just made me more interested. For example, this one from divinelifesociety.org [divinelifesociety.org] is fairly typical:
"These powers come as temptations to test your moral worth and they are the greatest barrier to Self-knowledge. These powers gain entry into you so subtly, so insidiously, that unless you are extraordinarily introspective, watchful and extremely careful, even without your knowledge you may succumb to them and become vain. The seeker has to be very careful that he does not encourage these powers at all, that he does not have any thoughts about them, and that he brushes them aside. Right from the beginning of the spiritual path, beware of occult powers. If you are caught in their fascination, you are lost. Your spiritual life is destroyed and all of your Yoga will simply go away. If you want God, shun ruthlessly all powers, all occult phenomena, as poison. These occult powers can become the greatest of corrupters, the greatest of obstacles for the true seekers. Do not be diverted by them"
Remember Lot's wife in the Bible? She was the one who God warned not to look back when he was trashing Sodom and Gomorrah. When she did it anyway, God turned her into a pillar of salt as punishment. To quote Kurt Vonnegut, "Lot's wife, of course, was told not to look back where all those people and their homes had been.she did look back, and I love her for that, because it was so human".
That's sort of the way I feel about this. Don't tell me not to look, because I want to look. Probably there is nothing to it, but I would like to find out. I've posted a few links I have found on my page and am tagging them with both "Yoga" and "occult". Please let me know if you know of any good insightful resources on this topic- I would like to learn more. |
